All homes must now have Carbon Monoxide detectors installed and in working order on all levels of the home, if you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact the Fire Prevention Officer @ 413-245-9733 for more information. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We are getting into the winter months now and with the price of gas and oil going the way they are, more and more people will be looking for alternative ways to heat their homes. Space heaters are an inexpensive way for most people to help heat the home, but there are a few safety tips you should follow when using a space heater to avoid a fire. You should NEVER use just space heaters to heat your house, that is not what they are intended for and may overload the circuits and wiring in your home and may lead to a fire. It is not a good idea to use more than 1 space heater per electrical circuit in your home; this could cause the circuit to overload and may lead to a fire. You could have a fire in the main electrical circuit box or even in the walls of your home due to the wires overheating. Do not use the space heater for extended periods of time, this may cause the heater itself to overheat and catch fire. You should only use the heaters for a short period of time to help get the chill out of the air in the room; the heater should not be set to the hottest position all the time. Space heaters should be turned off and unplugged when they are not in use or when you go to bed. You should always TURN OFF any heaters when you are leaving your house, even if you are only going to be gone for a short time, it only takes a few minuets for a fire to start and get out of control. If you have any questions, refer to the directions your heater came with or you can contact the manufacture. If you need further assistance after that, you can contact the Fire Prevention Officer at (413) 245-9733 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- School Wall Paper Regulations- Recently the Fire Department Fire Prevention Inspectors have been working cooperatively with the Holland Elementary School to come into complience with the State mandated Board of Fire Prevention Regulation's requirement for hanging of papers on school walls. To view the regulation, click here. We understand the educational value of displaying school work. Therefore, we are attempting to balance fire and life safety with the educational value and maintain complience within the scope of the regulations. We ask for your understanding during this difficult transition and thank you for your understanding while we work to give your child a safer environment to learn and return home safely at the end of the school day. |
